Museo Catedral de Santiago

About the museum

The Museo Catedral de Santiago offers a deeper understanding of the history and art of the cathedral through several spaces that show how the cathedral complex evolved: the cloister building, part of the former Buchería and the Pazo de Xelmírez. Because of their original uses and the reasons they were built, these spaces are as valuable as the works they hold.

The permanent collection is the result of centuries of offerings, gifts and bequests from historical figures of very different origins. It brings together sculpture, painting, goldwork, relics, tapestries, textile arts and archaeology, and reconstructs almost twelve centuries of artists, names and traditions.

The admission also covers the crypt of the Pórtico da Gloria and the Pazo de Xelmírez, where temporary exhibitions are staged. The museum also offers themed guided tours of the Pórtico da Gloria, the stone roofs of the cathedral and the Torre da Carraca and, through the Compostela Sacra programme, gives access to the Museo Colegiata de Sar (MuSar) and the Museo Diocesano. The entrances are on the Plaza del Obradoiro, at the Pazo de Xelmírez and, from inside the basilica, at the Puerta del Tesoro (Treasury Door).
