About the museum

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Madrid, formerly the Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo, was created from the collection that Madrid City Council began to assemble in 1980. It opened in November 2001 in the Cuartel del Conde Duque (Conde Duque Barracks), a Baroque building with Churrigueresque elements designed by Pedro de Ribera and built between 1717 and 1736. It was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962 and is now a Bien de Interés Cultural.

In April 2010 the museum closed for refurbishment, and the reopening works went on for years. On 3 February 2015 it reopened two of its rooms with a display from the collection, then called “El Museo portátil” (The Portable Museum), which includes the study of Ramón Gómez de la Serna.

The holdings, of more than 4,000 works, are mainly paintings and prints, together with sculpture, photography, drawing, video art and installation. The artists represented include Francisco Bores, Benjamín Palencia, Eduardo Arroyo, Juan Genovés, Lucio Muñoz, Fernando Zóbel and Juan Manuel Díaz-Caneja.

The most distinctive piece is the reconstruction of the study of the writer Ramón Gómez de la Serna, assembled with the original objects brought from his house in Buenos Aires. The museum depends on Madrid City Council and admission is free.
