About the museum

The Museo del Escritor is dedicated to the personal memory of the authors who wrote in Spanish: it displays their objects and belongings more than their books. It is run by the Argentine founders Raúl Manrique Girón and Claudio Pérez Míguez, who had already founded the Centro de Arte Moderno in Argentina in 1995 and moved to Madrid in 2002. The museum grew out of a display case opened to the street in 2007.

Its holdings include personal objects, first editions, publications and documents by Spanish-speaking writers. Some 200 objects are on show today, and much of the collection is kept in storage. The museum has moved to Calle de Hilarión Eslava, in the Argüelles district, near the house where Benito Pérez Galdós lived; in the same building there are a bookshop, two publishing houses and an art gallery.

In addition to free visits, the museum offers guided tours, a workshop on how books were made with movable type, a literary walk through Chamberí and breakfast at the museum.
