About the museum
The Museo de Bomberos de Madrid opened in 1982 in a building next to Fire Station No. 8 (Parque de Bomberos número 8) in the Puente de Vallecas district. It belongs to Madrid City Council and, after a complete refurbishment, tells the story of the city in parallel with that of its fire brigade.
The route is chronological. It begins with the so-called “matafuegos de la Villa” (early fire-fighting equipment) of the 16th and 17th centuries, passes through the founding of the corps as such in 1894 and reaches the present day. Panels with texts, illustrations, maps and photographs accompany the vehicles and display cases, and several videos feature testimonies from veteran and young firefighters.
One of the great attractions is the collection of 19th- and 20th-century fire-fighting vehicles, which includes hand-operated pumps drawn by animals, hose carts, wooden ladders, cranes, command cars and emergency vehicles. The display cases hold helmets from the 19th century onwards, demolition and rescue tools, fire extinguishers, communications equipment and personal protective equipment.
The museum also includes an area recreating the training gym of a fire station, interactive resources and virtual recreations on the causes of fire and prevention, a space devoted to major disasters and a tribute to firefighters who died in the line of duty. An exhibition from the corps’ archive displays documents such as the act of creation and the fire and switchboard operator logbooks.
