About the museum

The museum arose from conversations between the sculptor Eusebio Sempere and the engineers designing the Juan Bravo elevated road over the Paseo de la Castellana, which opened around 1970. The idea was to use the space beneath it to display modern sculpture in the heart of Madrid. The museum opened in 1972, and all the works were donated by their own authors.

It occupies some 4,200 m² beneath the elevated road and brings together pieces by artists of the historical avant-garde and of the generation of the 1950s, including Eduardo Chillida, Joan Miró, Eusebio Sempere, Martín Chirino, Pablo Palazuelo, Julio González, Pablo Serrano, Manuel Rivera, Gustavo Torner and José María Subirachs.

It belongs to Madrid City Council. In 2021 works were carried out to improve its accessibility, such as replacing the side staircases with ramps between its three levels. The site is open all day and lit at night so that the sculptures can be seen.
