About the museum
The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson was established in 2006 to promote culture, training and research. In 2013 it took over the management of the Masaveu Collection, a set of works ranging from the Romanesque to 20th-century art, including artists such as Sorolla, Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Tàpies, Chillida and Miquel Barceló. Its first exhibition with these holdings took place that same year at the Centros Cibeles in Madrid.
The Madrid headquarters occupies a neoclassical small palace on Calle de Alcalá Galiano, which had been a hotel. It was restored between 2015 and 2018 under the direction of Rafael Masaveu and Carolina Compostizo, preserving the original volume, the façade and the staircase. The centre opened in 2019 in the presence of King Felipe VI.
The building opened to the public for the first time as a free exhibition space. The galleries host temporary exhibitions organised with works from the collection, which are renewed regularly, and the foundation offers free guided tours led by its mediation team.
