About the museum
The Museo del Seguro of the Fundación MAPFRE explains how people have protected themselves against the unexpected throughout history and how they learned to share risks. It is located in the exhibition hall on Calle Bárbara de Braganza, in Madrid, and was reopened in 2010.
The permanent exhibition brings together some 600 pieces, from the mid-18th century to the late 20th century: fire-insurance plaques from buildings insured against fire, old insurance ordinances, policies, posters and advertising leaflets. The route covers milestones such as the origin of the insurance policy, the first marine insurance and the creation of fire insurance, and includes documents such as the record of the sinking of the Titanic.
Some 1,300 further pieces are kept in storage and can be consulted in the museum’s virtual collection. There is also an online virtual tour.
