About the museum
The Museum of Geology was created by the Department of Geology of the University of Oviedo and opened on 15 November 2001. It is on the ground floor of the departmental building of the Faculty of Geology, on the Llamaquique campus. It was conceived for teaching and outreach for all kinds of visitors, especially those with little knowledge of geology. It is regarded as the heir of the university's former Natural History Cabinet, with origins in the 19th century.
In June 2016 the museum closed for a major refurbishment. The works tripled its floor area, removed architectural barriers and opened a direct entrance from outside. It reopened on 26 October 2017. Today it displays around a thousand samples in 41 thematic units, covering sedimentary, metamorphic, igneous and volcanic rocks, meteorites, crystallography, fluorite and fossils. Highlights include Asturian fluorites, fossils from every age, fragments of the Cangas de Onís meteorite and a fluorescence room. Outside the building, the Jardín Geológico (Geological Garden) brings together large rocks from the Cantabrian Mountains.
