About the museum
The Museo de la Romería was born from the idea of Manuel Antonio Fernández, known in Lugones as “Manolito el Pegu”, and of the craftsman Roberto Nicolás Alonso, who for years matured the project of paying tribute to the feast of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso, the romería of El Carbayu, held in Lugones since the twenties. Fernández devoted nearly thirty years, from 1968 onwards, to building the model; Nicolás was in charge of the automation and lighting.
The museum opened on 10 July 2007. Its central piece is a large animated model that reproduces the romería as it was in 1952: the 18th-century chapel, the first drinks stalls among the carbayos (oak trees), the Ferris wheel, the boats and the carousel of wooden horses, the bandstand where folk groups and bands performed, and a crowd of figures in clothing of the period. Lights, sound and movement bring the scene to life.
In 2009 the Centro Asturiano de Madrid awarded the museum the “Urogallo Especial” prize. It is classified as an ethnographic museum and museum of cultural heritage in the Nora region.
