About the museum
The Villa Romana de Veranes, long known as Torrexón de San Pedro, lies in the municipality of Gijón, near the former Roman road linking this area with Asturica Augusta (Astorga). The site museum opened to the public in 2007 and is part of Gijón's archaeological museums, together with the Roman Baths of Campo Valdés and the Campa Torres Archaeological-Natural Park. It is also part of the Red de Villas Romanas de Hispania (Network of Roman Villas of Hispania).
What can be visited is the residential part (pars urbana) of a large 4th-century AD Late Roman mansion, built over the remains of an earlier rural settlement. Its owner was probably a notable named Veranius. The mansion went through three phases of renovation and extension during that century and remained in use until the 5th century.
The complex is spread over four terraces cut into the hillside, covering an area of nearly one hectare. A long covered gallery, a large dining room with an apse, the baths and the great reception hall, paved with a polychrome mosaic, can be made out. The exhibition room displays objects found during the excavations, from the High Imperial villa to its transformation in Late Antiquity and its passage into the Middle Ages.
