About the museum
The Museu de la Mar de Peñíscola is located in the Príncipe bastion, within the old town, in the building known as Les Costures. Its mission is to protect, conserve and disseminate the cultural heritage and to pay tribute to the town's seafaring tradition, gathering the most characteristic aspects of popular maritime culture.
The permanent exhibition is designed as a dynamic, participatory route that is easy to follow, intended for visitors of all ages and levels of education. It combines panels with photographs, drawings and engravings, audiovisual media and three aquariums with living Mediterranean species, towards which the route leads at the far end of the room.
The collection is organised in three sections. The historical-archaeological section explains the origins of the town and its port, its relationship with the sea and the isthmus, and brings together pieces found at land and underwater sites that show the intense Mediterranean trade of antiquity. The fishing section covers the fishing grounds, the boats and their evolution, and traditional and modern fishing gear, and recognises the work of seafarers with pieces donated mostly by residents of Peñíscola. The marine fauna section presents crustaceans, bivalves, echinoderms and gastropods, with panels on the underwater relief of the Mediterranean and the life cycle of some species.
