About the museum

The Centre de Desenvolupament Rural – Museu de la Pauma in Mas de Barberans opened in May 2010 as a space to promote actions that favour and diversify local and regional economic development, and to highlight a part of its own ethnological heritage: palm work (pauma, the dwarf palm or palmito).

The museum has two permanent exhibition rooms. One explains the process of working palm from the plant to the finished piece; the other widens the territorial scope to all the villages of the Parque Natural dels Ports and reports on the social aspects of this activity. An audiovisual, “La Bruixa Palmira”, completes the visit, and the “Racó de les Fibres” is an educational space devoted to the vegetable fibres that humanity has used for various purposes, such as dye plants or basketry.

The centre includes the group of practising craftswomen that emerged from the training courses: they teach the workshops, give craft demonstrations and sell pieces in the museum shop. In addition to its own and temporary exhibitions, the museum offers plaiting workshops adapted to different ages, consultation services, loans of pieces and of the photographic archive, and it organises the monographic fibre fair on the first weekend of August.
