About the museum
Tobacco arrived in La Palma in the mid-19th century through emigrant farmers who returned from Cuba, and Breña Alta became one of the areas of the island where cultivation took root best, with a highly valued quality. The museum arose from that tradition. It opened in November 2013 in the Parque de Los Álamos, in the San Pedro district, next to the Museo de la Fiesta de las Cruces, in premises promoted by the Breña Alta town council.
The Museo del Puro Palmero route covers several rooms with panels, videos and multimedia material. It explains the origin of tobacco, its use in ancient cultures, its arrival in Europe and its spread through society, the evolution of forms of consumption, and the techniques of growing and making the cigar. It focuses on the link between the product and La Palma and Breña Alta. It also reviews other moments of the island's economic history, such as emigration and the monocultures of vines, sugar cane, cochineal and bananas.
The section dedicated to the Fiesta de las Cruces, which is smaller and has two rooms, presents this May tradition, in which residents decorate around twenty crosses each year with flowers, fabrics and natural elements. A sales point offers local craft products.
