About the museum
The museum grew out of the work of the Rayas collective, a group of teachers from La Palma who began in the 1980s to recover school furniture, textbooks and teaching materials that were no longer in use, most of them donated by private individuals. The collective's name comes from a reading primer (cartilla) widely used in Spanish schools for much of the 20th century. The museum's activities began in 1985, and in 1993 a permanent exhibition opened at the Centro de Profesores (teachers' centre) of Santa Cruz de La Palma.
Its main driving force was Germán González González (1940–2011), a teacher, headteacher of the Pérez Andreu school and education inspector, who chaired the association until his death. In 2013 the town council agreed to name the museum after him.
In 2009 the museum had to leave its premises at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas (Official Language School). Thanks to an agreement with the town council, it was installed in several classrooms and in the foyer of the former school of the Sector Sur, now the Centro Cultural Pérez Andreu, beside the Plaza de Santo Domingo, where it reopened in November 2015. The collection shows how schooling on the island evolved over the 20th century.
