Casa Vandewalle

17th-century mansion in Santa Cruz de La Palma housing the private cinema and photography collection of Jorge Lozano Vandewalle.

Opening hours unknownAdmission €5

About the museum

Casa Vandewalle stands on Calle Virgen de la Luz, on part of the plot that the Vandewalle family had held in Santa Cruz de La Palma since the 16th century, when Luis Vandewalle the Elder, a native of Bruges, settled on the island. The present building was constructed in the first third of the 17th century and follows the layout of the Portuguese house: an entrance hall (zaguán), a staircase to the upper floor, Delft tiles, a Mudéjar ceiling and a back garden with Canary Island palms and a dragon tree (drago).

In the 20th century the house was a meeting place for culture. In 1984 the photographer and filmmaker Jorge Lozano Vandewalle founded, together with the journalist Loló Fernández Felipe, the painter Facundo Fierro and the designer Óscar Benítez, the group El Taller, devoted to printmaking, in whose printing press Canarian and foreign artists worked. In 1993 Lozano created the production company Luz 15, whose name recalls the address of the house.

Today the house serves as a museum for its collection of cinema and photography equipment, which is presented as the largest private collection of its kind in the Canary Islands. The route runs from pre-cinema, with magic lanterns, optical boxes with views of Santa Cruz de La Palma, panoramas, dioramas and optical toys such as zoetropes and phenakistoscopes, to the first film cameras and film formats from 8 mm to digital.
