About the museum
Txakolingunea is the interpretation centre for txakoli in Bakio, run by the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia through Bizkaikoa. It is in a modern building at the entrance to the village, next to the fronton (pelota court), and houses five rooms with large-format audiovisuals, interactive screens, music and winemaking equipment.
The exhibition explains that the txakoli tradition in Bakio goes back to the late 14th century, and that its wines belong to the Bizkaiko Txakolina designation of origin, one of the three in the Basque Country. It traces the history and evolution of txakoli and its wineries, which keep traditional values while adopting new technologies, and presents the different varieties: the white, the best known, the rosé known as “ojo de gallo” (literally “rooster's eye”), and the red, which is produced in smaller quantities. The route is organised in sections on the wine, the history of Bakio, the stories of txakoli, the industry, and a final section on sounds and colours.
The visit includes a permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions on a variety of themes and, depending on the rate chosen, the tasting of one or two txakolis. The museum also offers guided tastings and educational workshops. It belongs to the Red de Museos de la Costa Vasca (Basque Coast Museum Network) and the Red de Museos Gastronómicos de Euskadi (Basque Gastronomic Museum Network).
