About the museum
The Museo Diocesano de Cuenca, also presented as the Museo Tesoro de la Catedral (Cathedral Treasury Museum), occupies the first three floors of the Palacio Episcopal (Bishops' Palace), a building whose construction spans the 13th to the 18th centuries. Its museographic project is the work of Gustavo Torner.
The museum traces the history of faith in the diocese of Cuenca through pieces that come from the cathedral and from parishes across the diocese. The collection is spread over ten rooms and brings together more than 200 works, mostly from the 16th century, together with medieval and Renaissance art.
Among its best-known pieces are the Byzantine diptych, a reliquary icon that belonged to the despots of Epirus, and two paintings by El Greco. The museum also displays tapestries, carpets and Renaissance panel paintings, and offers activities designed for children.
