About the museum
The Espacio Torner occupies the late Gothic church of San Pablo, part of the former Dominican convent in Cuenca, on the Hoz del Huécar, next to the Parador Nacional. The Bishopric of Cuenca ceded the church to the Ministry of Culture, which commissioned its restoration in 2004 from the architects Ángela García de Paredes and Ignacio García Pedrosa. The building then passed to the Fundación Torner and opened to the public in 2005. In 2006 it received a special mention at the Europa Nostra Awards.
It is conceived as a place for contemplation, with minimal intervention and a spare atmosphere. It brings together around forty works by Gustavo Torner (Cuenca, 1925), selected and placed by the artist himself. Half of them are on deposit from the Museo Reina Sofía, which holds some six hundred pieces donated by the artist. Torner worked in painting, sculpture, collage and printmaking, as well as museography, and he designed the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español de Cuenca.
