About the museum
Casa Luján is a colonial-style mansion built between the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the old town of Puntallana. It has two floors arranged in an L-shape, a spacious courtyard enclosed by a wall, and a crenellated doorway.
Throughout its history it was a private residence, and it also housed the courthouse, a Guardia Civil barracks, a girls' school and the town council. It has been municipal property since the early 20th century and was restored in the 1980s; successive conservation works have kept its original form.
Today it functions as an ethnographic museum and as a centre for promoting and selling local crafts. On the ground floor, where the stables, storeroom and oven used to be, a girls' school is recreated with period furniture and materials lent by the Asociación Rayas from its Museo de Historia de la Educación. The upper floor is furnished as a home of another era, with kitchen, dining room, bedroom and living room, and is brought to life by life-size rag dolls, the mayos, made by the Asociación de Amigos de los Mayos de Santa Cruz de La Palma. The house also accommodates the rural tourism information office.
