About the museum
The Grandas de Salime Ethnographic Museum, known as “Pepe el Ferreiro”, was founded on the initiative of José María Naveiras Escanlar, nicknamed Pepe el Ferreiro, who for many years gathered a collection of rural objects. It was set up through an agreement between the Department of Education and Culture of the Principality of Asturias and the Grandas de Salime town council. It began in the lower floor of the town hall and moved to its present location in 1989.
The museum covers about 3,150 m² and is organised into four areas: the rectory house, built in 1814, the corral, the miller's house, with three water-powered flour mills, and the manor house (casona). Around them are outbuildings and auxiliary structures, such as the hórreo (raised granary), the panera (grain store), the cabazo, the chapel and a soda-water factory, making 19 spaces to visit in all.
Its holdings approach 20,000 items and come mainly from Asturian councils, though also from other parts of the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. Most of them are on show in the permanent exhibition about the life of rural communities. It is a public museum of regional (comarcal) character, owned by the public company for tourism and cultural management and promotion of the Principality of Asturias.
