About the museum
The Museo Etnográfico de Oyón-Oion opened its doors on 22 January 1995 in an adapted room of the former Casa Sindical (trade union house) building. It brings together objects that describe the life, customs, curiosities and anecdotes of the Rioja Alavesa over recent centuries, and even in ancestral times.
The room, of about 220 m², is organised around seven themes: agriculture, livestock, trades such as shoemaking or carpentry, weights and measures, transport, domestic life, with bread-making and household chores, and religious ornaments. In total 297 pieces are displayed; some of the liturgical garments, such as chasubles, dalmatics and copes, were made in Toledo workshops in the 18th century.
In the vestibule is displayed the third Giralda (weathervane) of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a weathervane with a carved wooden head and an iron-sheet body. The museum is visited by appointment arranged with the town council.
