About the museum

The Casa de las Ciencias is a centre of the Logroño town council dedicated to promoting scientific and technological culture through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, courses, screenings, observations and demonstrations.

It occupies the former Matadero Municipal (municipal slaughterhouse), designed by the architect Luis Barrón in 1901, which began operating on 1 June 1911 and is considered one of the most interesting examples of industrial architecture in Logroño. It ceased to be a slaughterhouse in 1981 and, after several uses, was renovated at the end of the 1990s; the centre opened on 22 April 1999.

The building stands on the north bank of the Ebro, opposite the old town and between the Puente de Hierro and the Puente de Piedra. It has four temporary exhibition rooms on the ground floor (660 m² in total), and on the first floor a lecture hall for 100 people, three workshop classrooms and a documentation centre. The Jardín de las Ciencias, which is free to enter, allows visitors to experiment with sight, movement, sound and weather.
