About the museum
The Casa de la Danza was founded in 2003 in the historic centre of Logroño with the idea of being more than a museum: a meeting place to spread the art of dance. That is why it chose the name “casa” (house) instead of “museo” (museum), although the costume collection is the core of its activity. The venue is a 17th-century calado, one of the largest in the city, which was used for making wine and retains the ashlar stonework of the barrel vault and the rubble masonry of the walls. According to tradition, the people of Logroño used it during the French siege of 1521 to reach the Ebro at night and obtain food.
The collection brings together more than seventy costume pieces that belonged to ballet, modern dance, Spanish dance, flamenco and bolero school artists, almost all donated to the house. These are complemented by pointe shoes and half-pointe shoes, flamenco footwear, accessories and props, as well as painting, drawing and photography. The centre also has a library of around eight hundred volumes, an audio collection of more than two thousand titles and a video library of around eighteen hundred tapes.
Outside the galleries, the house runs activities such as the Bosque de la Danza, an annual tree planting in memory of deceased artists held every year since 2009 on International Dance Day, and the “Tardes en Danza” screening series. It also publishes the magazine “Danza en Escena” and has a small multimedia space for screenings and talks.
