Museo del Oriente de Asturias

Museum in the historic complex of the Casas de Llacín, in Porrúa (Llanes), on rural life in eastern Asturias up to the mid-20th century.

Opening hoursAdmission €3 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum owes its existence to Teresa Sordo Sordo, born in Porrúa and emigrated to Mexico, who donated the family houses and estate of Llacín for the enjoyment of her native village. This gesture led to the creation of the Asociación Cultural Llacín, which promoted the Fundación Museo Etnográfico del Oriente de Asturias, the museum's owner. It opened to the public on 10 July 2000 and is considered the first experience in Asturias of social participation in the management of cultural heritage.

The Casas de Llacín were the home of the family formed by Manuel Sordo Haces (1841–1919), Vicenta Pandal Sordo (1846–1928) and their children, who, like many families in eastern Asturias, practised seasonal migration to America. The southern row of buildings and the striking wooden overhanging passageway were built with the capital gathered on those journeys. The complex stands on a one-hectare estate with fruit trees and woodland, including a monumental avocado tree planted in 1906.

Today the museum allows visitors to walk through the traditional farmhouse and has rooms devoted to clothing, crafts and trades, which show what rural life in eastern Asturias was like up to the mid-20th century.
