About the museum
The centre stands in Benia de Onís, at the gates of the Picos de Europa National Park. The building belongs to the Onís town council, and its architecture takes inspiration from the mountains of the massif. It is run by the Fundación para la Conservación del Quebrantahuesos (FCQ), an organisation that since 1995 has promoted conservation and reintroduction initiatives for this bird in the Picos de Europa.
The permanent exhibition occupies two floors. It begins with an audiovisual on the geological and biological origins of the Picos de Europa and the role of grazing, and continues in rooms devoted to the shepherds, the mountains and the bearded vulture, with information on its biology, ecology and behaviour. A vertical model of a limestone cliff brings together some 30 species of flora and fauna at natural size, and a final audiovisual addresses environmental problems and species conservation.
In addition to the free visit with free audio guide, the centre offers guided tours, an eco-laboratory for environmental workshops, a training room and an outdoor area with green spaces and playgrounds. For schools there is the programme “Naturaleza y Cultura de Montaña en los Picos de Europa”, with field trips, workshops and participatory games.
