About the museum
The centre is in La Matanza, capital of the Valle de Villaverde, a Cantabrian enclave surrounded by municipalities in Biscay. It occupies the building that once housed the valley's schools and its former jail, and began operating in July 2001.
The exhibition explains the productive activities of the area and the traditional trades that have now almost disappeared. Among them are the making of charcoal in the hoya carbonera (charcoal pit), the production of wine, cider and chacolí, and work in the sawmills, as well as everyday life in the valley's houses. Also presented is the pasabolo tablón, a traditional bowling sport, and a room devoted to the Monte Tejea and its role in charcoal production.
Every year, on the last weekend of July, the valley holds the Feria de la Hoya, a fiesta of regional tourist interest that commemorates the making of charcoal.
