About the museum
The museum is a project of the Asociación de Mujeres Gitanas ROMI de Granada (ROMI Association of Romani Women of Granada), which arose from the need to make known and safeguard the culture developed over centuries by the Romani people, with special attention to the contribution of Romani women. It opened on 22 November 2006, the Day of the Romani People of Andalusia, with the support of Granada City Council and the regional government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía).
It is located in the Sacromonte district, within the La Chumbera complex, at the International Centre for Romani Studies (Centro Internacional de Estudios Gitanos). It occupies municipally owned caves that were restored for the occasion and that house its objects across nine rooms.
The collection brings together books, manuscripts and laws and regulations concerning the Romani people, dictionaries of Romanó and Caló, and documentation on customs, traditions, gastronomy and the Romani wedding ritual. It also includes a reconstructed cave dwelling from the Sacromonte, traditional costumes, a re-creation of a vardo (Romani caravan) and works by the sculptor Luis Heredia Amaya.
