About the museum
The museum originated in the 19th-century disentailment of Church property: artworks collected from suppressed convents and monasteries were used to set up the Provincial Museum in the former Dominican convent of Santa Cruz la Real, which opened on 11 August 1839. Over the years it moved several times: in 1889 to council premises, in 1897 to a house on calle Arandas and in 1923 to the Casa de Castril on the Carrera del Darro.
The aim of housing it in the Palace of Charles V, an unfinished and unused building, was achieved in stages. In 1941 three rooms on the ground floor were set up, but the poor state of the building led to a return to the Casa de Castril. Thanks to the efforts of Emilio Orozco Díaz, the museum's director, and the negotiations of Antonio Gallego y Burín, the museum opened on 6 October 1958 on the first floor of the palace, where it remains today.
Much of the collection comes from the disentailed holdings and consists mainly of Granadan religious painting from the 16th to the 18th centuries, from monasteries such as the Cartuja and from series of paintings from the city's convents. During Orozco Díaz's directorship, from 1956 to 1972, it was expanded through purchases and donations, including works by Granadan artists of the first half of the 20th century. Since 1984 the collection of the Junta de Andalucía, covering the 19th and 20th centuries, has been added, and today acquisitions focus on contemporary Granadan artists such as Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, Manuel Rivera and José Guerrero.
