About the museum
The museum is housed in the Baroque Alegría palace, rebuilt in 1733 and also known as the palace of the Count of Montefuerte, which survived the bombing of 1937. The Bizkaia Provincial Council (Diputación Foral de Bizkaia) acquired the site in 1982 and refurbished it as a museum to show the historical, political and cultural significance of the foral (charter) setting and the characteristics of the community that makes up Euskal Herria. It opened to the public in 1991.
The exhibition is spread over four floors. The ground floor is devoted to the physical environment that shapes the country's ways of life. The first floor traces the historical evolution and the events that led to the current political configuration. The second brings together sport, folklore, festivities, music, dance, beliefs and myths, and the attic is reserved for temporary exhibitions.
The museum offers guided visits, a video room, lecture rooms and a shop.
