About the museum
The Museo Cruz Herrera is dedicated to the painter José Cruz Herrera, born in La Línea de la Concepción on 1 October 1890 and died in Casablanca in 1972. The artist studied in La Línea, Seville and Madrid, travelled through Europe, Morocco and South America, and had studios in Casablanca, Neuilly and San Roque. He donated an extensive collection of paintings to his native town.
The museum opened in 1975 and was later reopened in its current location in the Jardines Saccone, in the building formerly occupied by the town council, known as Villa San José. With the move, the museum clearly focused on the figure of the painter and became the most complete art gallery devoted to him.
Across six rooms (Primera Época, Bocetos, Costumbrista, Desnudos, Árabe and Retratos Masculinos) his development can be followed, from works of adolescence to mature painting. The building also has a temporary exhibition room, a multipurpose room, a room for educational activities and a shop.
