About the museum
The Valdecilla estate in Medio Cudeyo was the home of Ramón Pelayo de la Torriente, Marquis of Valdecilla. A native of the village and a merchant with businesses in Cuba, he sold his companies in 1920 and returned to live in Valdecilla until his death in 1932. His best-known work was the Casa de Salud (hospital) that bears his name, today the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla.
In 2003 the Medio Cudeyo town council acquired the estate, some 15 hectares of meadows and woodland, which had been badly neglected. The main house, the Casa Blanca, is now a museum that presents the legacy of Ramón Pelayo and recreates the main rooms of a well-off family from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with some of the original furniture. It also has a projection room, a multipurpose hall and a room for temporary exhibitions.
The grounds include other restored buildings: La Casuca and the Casa San Rafael, which show rooms and décor from the first half of the 20th century, and La Solana, a house in traditional Cantabrian mountain style. El Garaje, the former coach houses, is used as classrooms, and La Cabaña, the former stables, is used by the escuela taller (training workshop) of Medio Cudeyo.
