About the museum
The Palacio de Elsedo, in Pámanes (Liérganes), was built between 1710 and 1715 on the commission of Francisco de Hermosa y Revilla, first Count of Torre-Hermosa, a Knight of Calatrava and senior official at the court of Felipe V. It replaced the family’s former ancestral house. The design is attributed to the architect Francisco Agüero, possibly a native of Pámanes, who also worked on the cathedral of Oviedo.
The complex brings together several buildings with a degree of independence. It is entered through a portal bearing the coat of arms of the Avellano and Hermosa families, and the octagonal-plan tower stands out, a novelty in the region. Next to the palace is a Latin-cross chapel that holds the tombs of the founder and several relatives. The building was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1983.
The palace is privately owned, and much of it is devoted to a museum of modern art. The collection presents Spanish contemporary art from 1900 and is organised into four thematic groups: still life and object; history, memory and society; landscape, matter and environment; and nude, action and body. The artists represented include Pablo Serrano, Berrocal, Chillida, Vázquez Díaz, María Blanchard, Gutiérrez Solana, Pancho Cossío and Lucio Muñoz.
