About the museum
The Museo Memorial del Cinturón de Hierro is in the Centro de Cultura in Berango, a few minutes from the remains of the defensive line that the Basque Government (Gobierno de Euzkadi) built in 1936 and 1937 to protect Bilbao during the Spanish Civil War. It commemorates the people who died in the conflict and explains how and why this belt of fortifications was built, a project on which thousands of people worked.
Through a clear and modern set design, the exhibition shows the features of the fortifications, including machine-gun nests, and recounts their capture by Francoist troops in June 1937: about 48 hours of intense fighting that decided the battle for Bilbao.
The visit includes an exhibition room with space for about 40 people, a short film, and the possibility of seeing the surviving remains of the defensive line in Berango and Sopela. The museum also organises guided visits, lectures and activities, and its website offers a virtual tour and downloadable leaflets.
