About the museum

Rialia was founded in 2006 with the aim of creating a museum devoted to industry that would remember and preserve the industrial heritage of Bizkaia between the late 19th and the late 20th century. Today it aims to be a reference point for the industrial legacy of the Margen Izquierda, for the interpretation of the ría and of the town of Portugalete, and a means of understanding the Basque history of the last two centuries through industry.

The exhibition route is designed as a sensory and participatory experience, with new technologies, accessibility and interactivity. It can be followed in three languages (Basque, Spanish and English) and is organised by theme over four floors: on the fourth, Portugalete and the maritime landscape; on the third, the world of work on the ría and industry; on the second, the iron industry, the art collection and the documentation centre; and on the first, the model of Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, with photography, literature, music and games.

The art collection brings together works with an industrial theme from the 19th and 20th centuries from companies such as Altos Hornos de Vizcaya or Babcock & Wilcox, on loan from SEPI, together with the ethnographic collection of the Transbordador de Bizkaia and the collection of the Portugalete town council. In 2026 the museum celebrates its twentieth anniversary and has opened an immersive audiovisual room.
