About the museum
The museum opened on 25 May 1982 with the aim of preserving the historical memory of medicine in the Basque Country. It belongs to the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and is located on its Leioa campus, in Bizkaia.
Its collection brings together some 6,000 medical objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, arranged by theme in 24 rooms covering around 1,500 m². These include rooms devoted to pharmacy, weights and measures, asepsis and antisepsis, microscopy, radiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, surgery, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, cardiology, electrotherapy and natural sciences, as well as a room on folk medicine and alternative medicine.
As well as the permanent exhibition, the museum organises temporary and virtual exhibitions, publishes books and collaborates in the training of medical students and those of other disciplines.

- Especialidades médicas – Rooms of radiology, gynaecology and obstetrics, anaesthesia, surgery, endoscopy, dentistry, ophthalmology, cardiology, electrotherapy, pathological anatomy and neurology.
- Medicina popular y ciencias naturales – Room of folk medicine and alternative medicine, together with the natural sciences room and the Elhuyar Gallery.
