About the museum
The Fanderia mill is a former hydraulic complex in Errenteria that harnessed the power of water from the 15th century, when it operated as an ironworks (ferrería). Over the years it became a fandería (the area where iron was worked, which became independent of the ironworks in the 18th century), then a mill, a flour factory and an animal feed factory, until all economic activity ceased in 1996.
The building bears witness to the rise and evolution of industry in Errenteria. Today it houses a river interpretation centre, the Casa del Río (Ibaiaren Etxea), whose aim is to raise awareness of environmental and cultural heritage and to protect the river ecosystem that surrounds the mill; the river was the axis of the territory from the iron industry to the present day.
The visit includes the milling mechanism in operation, two audiovisuals and a collection of information panels on the mill, the cultural heritage and the river. The centre also offers an educational programme for schools, and the monthly openings sometimes include workshops and free guided tours.
