About the museum
The museum's origins lie in the large exhibition of liturgical and eucharistic art organised in May 1946 on the occasion of the Provincial Eucharistic Congress of Gipuzkoa. The success of the show led, in the following decades, to the recovery of religious artworks that were scattered in storerooms and parish premises. In 1985 Bishop José María Setién commissioned Edorta Kortadi to create the Museo Diocesano de San Sebastián, housed in the former cinema of the Sagrada Familia parish in Amara.
The museum closed in 2010 while awaiting its move to the church of Santa María del Coro. Economic difficulties stalled the project until 2013, when Rafael Moneo and Pedro Elcuaz began designing the new space in the Santa Marta nave of the basilica. In 2016 the museum reopened in its new home under a new name, D'Museoa.
The permanent exhibition presents ten centuries of religious art from Gipuzkoa, organised in three periods: the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Age and the Contemporary Age. Artists represented include Rodrigo de Zuazola, Ambrosio de Bengoetxea, El Greco, Ribera, Beobide, Chillida and Oteiza.
