About the museum

The Museo Municipal de San Roque, known as the Museo Carteia, brings together in its main section the pieces found in the excavations of the Carteia archaeological site, located in the municipality. The museum is in the historic quarter, on Calle San Felipe, and is run by the San Roque town council. It forms part of a network of municipal museums that includes the section devoted to the sculptor Luis Ortega Brú in the Palacio de los Gobernadores.

The galleries offer a chronological route from the Phoenician-Punic origins of Carteia to its imperial Roman splendour and, beyond that, to the founding of the city of San Roque after the English capture of Gibraltar in 1704. Among the pieces on display are tableware, decorated cornices, busts and figurines, coins, oil lamps and unguent vessels.

Highlights include the quay moved from its original site at Campamento, with an unusual drainage system made of amphorae, the frieze of bucrania (ox skulls), a marble relief of an ox skull adorned with garlands, and an archaeological stratigraphy showing the different layers. Another section is devoted to the history of San Roque and holds the Pendón de Gibraltar, an embroidered silk banner bearing the city's coat of arms. The visit is complemented by audiovisual material and a virtual reality experience that recreates the city at its height.
