About the museum
The Museo Nicanor Piñole was created in 1991 to house the collection of paintings and drawings that the artist's widow, Enriqueta Ceñal Costales, donated to the city of Gijón. Its main mission is to study, preserve and disseminate the work of Piñole (Gijón, 1878–1978), one of the leading figures in the renewal of Asturian painting in the first third of the 20th century.
The museum occupies the former Asilo Pola, an eclectic building designed in 1903–1904 by Luis García Bellido and built by Miguel García de la Cruz. The collection combines the widow's donation with deposits from the Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. All the genres the painter practised are represented: portraits, landscapes, still lifes and scenes of everyday customs.
A highlight is the more than five thousand drawings, sketches, studies, poster designs and illustrations, and the more than three hundred self-portraits, as well as portraits of his mother and other relatives. The museum also holds personal objects belonging to Piñole, such as his painting tools, medals, the family photographic archive, his library and the furniture from his house.
