About the museum
The Museo de las Termas Romanas de Campo Valdés is a site museum located underground beneath Campo Valdés square, opposite the church of San Pedro and at sea level. The remains, from the High Imperial period, are considered one of the most important Roman sites in northern Spain.
The baths were discovered in 1903 during sewer works and remained hidden from the public until 1965. They were built outside the Roman city wall and consisted of a domestic area and a bathing area, with cold, warm and hot rooms; in the hot room there was a pool heated by an underground heating system.
Construction of the building began in the 1st century. By the 5th century it had fallen into decline and became a rubbish dump and later a cemetery for the San Pedro churches built on the site from the 15th century onwards. The museum displays the remains of the baths recovered in archaeological excavations.
