About the museum
The Museo Pedagóxico de Galicia (Mupega) is a centre of the Consellería de Educación of the Xunta de Galicia dedicated to recovering, studying and showing Galicia’s educational heritage. It was created by Decree 268/2000 of 2 November, and it revives a 1926 project to found a Galician museum specialising in education. Its current site, on San Lázaro street in Santiago de Compostela, opened on 21 October 2004, and in 2006 the Consello da Xunta recognised it as a museum of pedagogical and scientific-technical content with regional scope.
Spread over three floors, the permanent exhibition shows the development of Galician schooling: classrooms recreated from the 19th century to the EGB (Spanish basic general education), school objects and toys from other eras, and an old classroom where visitors can feel like pupils of the past. The museum pays particular attention to educational work in the Galician language, has a documentation service and organises travelling exhibitions, school visits, workshops and activities for various audiences.
