About the museum

The Monasterio de la Concepción is one of the oldest and most representative enclosed convents in Granada. It stands in the lower Albaicín, a World Heritage neighbourhood, opposite the Alhambra and parallel to the Carrera del Darro. A papal bull of Pope Leo X founded it in Rome in 1518 for Franciscan nuns of the Third Order Regular.

The complex rises over Moorish palaces, houses and gardens from the Muslim period, which are integrated with the buildings of a Christian convent. The nuns have lived there without interruption from the foundation to the present day, so visitors walk through the rooms in their original context and not only through a collection on display, as in a typical museum.

The heritage accumulated over five centuries includes archive documents, publications from the old Granada printing press, vestments and goldsmith work. The most valuable items are the sculpted and painted images, the work of artists such as Jacobo Florentino, Sánchez Cotán, the García brothers, Pablo de Rojas, Alonso and Pedro de Mena, Alonso Cano, Bocanegra, José de Mora and Risueño. To these are added thematic cycles of clay sculptures.
