About the museum
The museum opened on 24 July 1983, to coincide with the bicentenary of Simón Bolívar's birth. It is located in Ziortza-Bolibar, the former Puebla de Bolíbar, the place of origin of the Liberator's ancestors, next to the coastal stretch of the Camino de Santiago where it passes through Bizkaia.
The building is the Errementarikua farmhouse, a former ironworks. Its owner is the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia.
The route is spread across three levels. The entrance hall shows Bolivarian iconography. The first floor is devoted to life in Bizkaia during the Middle Ages: the landscape and way of life, rural society, the churches of Bolibar and Zenarruza, charcoal-making and the use of timber, ironworks and mills, and the origins of the villas (medieval towns). The second floor offers a chronological biography of Bolívar, from his birth in Venezuela in 1783 to his death in Colombia in 1830, with his genealogy, his travels in Europe, his stays in Bilbao and Madrid, political documents and the geography of independence in the Bolivarian countries.
