About the museum
The Taller Museo Santxotena is in Artziniega (Álava), in the Barrataguren district, about 600 metres from the town centre. It is the studio of the sculptor Xabier Santxotena, born into a family linked to woodcraft and a leading pupil of Jorge Oteiza from 1970, who later studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The studio-museum offers a direct relationship between visitor and artist. The route traces the process of the work from the sketch to the finished piece, grouped into series or “families”, such as the tributes to poets and to pelota, the menhirs, Gernika, Planetarium, Basoak and Irintzi. The space combines contemporary art with archaic references and audiovisual content, and has around eight rooms.
The studio runs family activities and workshops in which children can create their own sculptures. It is also known for its temporary exhibitions, such as the annual exhibition of nativity scenes (belenes) from around the world at Christmas. The sculptor himself promotes the Parque Museo Santxotena in Arizkun (Navarre), which together with this studio forms the “Santxotena museums”.
