About the museum
The bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, a Bien de Interés Cultural, has been part of the city’s history since the 18th century. The visit takes in the arena, the stands, the Patio de Caballos and the Capilla de los Toreros, presided over by an altarpiece of the Virgen del Rosario with numerous ex-votos from bullfighters.
The visit includes the exhibition rooms, which hold an important collection of bullfighting art by authors from Goya to Jean Cocteau. The Sala de Pinturas and the Sala de Estampas were inaugurated by the Princes of Asturias on 21 November 2008. The Sala de Pinturas displays oil paintings of bullfighting subjects from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, mostly from the Romantic period, with works by Gutiérrez de la Vega, Eugenio Lucas, the Domínguez Bécquer brothers and Horace Vernet.
The Sala de Estampas holds almost all the historic bullfighting series of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as the series “Arte de torear” by Pepe Hillo (1804), and twelve prints from Goya’s Tauromaquia, third edition, printed in Paris in 1876. The route ends with more recent holdings: bullfighting costumes, capes, posters, bulls’ heads and contemporary paintings, as well as bronzes by Mariano Benlliure and posters from the era of Belmonte and Joselito.
