About the museum
The Museu Comarcal de Berga is the centre for promoting the city's cultural tourism and is open both to visitors and to local people. It is also the starting point for the guided tours that explain the evolution of Berga throughout its history, with particular attention to its medieval heritage, to its pre-industrial and industrial elements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and to the Carlist Wars of the 19th century.
The collection brings together pieces that help interpret the history of the city. Late medieval Berga is represented, among other pieces, by the Pedret ceramic jug of the 13th century; the Berguedà is the comarca with the most excavated medieval settlements, and medieval archaeology is considered to have been born in this comarca. Bourbon Berga was a fortified town with bastions and a dynamic artisan city that drove the industrialisation of Catalonia with the cotton-spinning machines known as “maixerines” or “berguedanes”; the museum keeps original pieces from one of these, donated by the descendants of Ramon Soler. Carlist Berga, capital of Carlism and gateway between the mountains and the plain, is illustrated with objects such as the hand press from Cal Morlans.
