About the museum
The museum was founded in 1896, when Bishop Ramon Riu i Cabanes, wishing to safeguard and make known the heritage of the diocese, opened the Musaeum Archaelogicum de Solsona, one of the first diocesan museums in Catalonia. In the first half of the 20th century it grew considerably with a new prehistory section.
It is housed in the Palau Episcopal in Solsona and was completely renovated in the 1980s under the patronage of the Diocese of Solsona, the Generalitat de Catalunya and Solsona town council. The diocese contributed its holdings, the Generalitat the archaeological material from the Solsonès region, and the town council its ethnographic collection.
Today it holds multidisciplinary collections of the historical and artistic heritage of the comarques that make up the diocese, from the Neolithic to the 20th century, with examples of painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, textiles, ceramics, wrought iron and metalwork. A storeroom on the upper floor of the building holds the items not displayed in the permanent galleries, classified into two main groups: archaeology and art.
