About the museum
The Museu Rocaguinarda de Terrissa dels Països Catalans, also called the Museu de Terrissa Catalana, is located in the rectory of Sant Andreu d’Oristà, behind the parish church. It opened on 30 November 1981 on the initiative of Ramon Boladeras, from Prats de Lluçanès, and of Mosén Àngel Franquesa, rector of Oristà, with the collaboration of the Associació Catalana de Ceràmica and Santiago Albertí. It began as a small museum of 425 pieces spread across five rooms on the ground floor of the rectory.
The collection has grown through donations from private individuals. In 1990 the Museu de Ceràmica de Barcelona lent, on deposit for twenty years, a collection of some 800 pieces from the 4th to the 18th centuries, from the Hospital de la Santa Creu de Barcelona and churches in the city; rooms on the first floor were fitted out to display them, and they opened in 1992.
Today the museum brings together between 4,000 and 5,000 pieces of everyday ceramics and earthenware from the Catalan Countries (the sources give different figures), organised in seven rooms by territorial origin. They allow the Catalan pottery tradition to be followed from the 4th to the 20th century, with particular emphasis on medieval objects and the potter's work tools.
