About the museum
The museum was created on 7 December 1976 by an agreement between the Diputació de Girona and the Bishopric. The Diputació contributed part of the former Museo Provincial de Antigüedades y Bellas Artes, founded in 1846, and the Bishopric contributed the Museu Diocesà, founded in 1942, and the Palau Episcopal. Between 1979 and 1991 several phases of adaptation of the building were carried out, and in 1992 the Generalitat de Catalunya took over the management.
The museum occupies the Palau Episcopal, next to the cathedral. The first records of the palace go back to 988; in the 13th century it was extended in Gothic style, with two towers and the Salons of the Throne and of the Arch, and between the 15th and 16th centuries it was transformed from a castle into a palace. In 2010 a lift was installed in the courtyard. Its upper floor preserves the former prison for clerics, and the building also contains the chapel of Santa Catalina, now the Josep Irla auditorium.
The permanent collection follows a chronological order: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and 19th- and 20th-century art, as well as the art collection of the newspaper Avui. Highlights include the portable altar of Sant Pere de Rodes, the Cristo en Majestad and the Viga de Cruïlles, the Púbol altarpiece by Bernat Martorell and the Sant Miquel de Cruïlles altarpiece by Lluís Borrassà. The auditorium shows the large canvas by Martí Alsina “El gran día de Girona”, almost five by eleven metres.
