About the museum

The Museu de la Terrissa de Quart opened on 27 March 2011 to showcase the pottery tradition that characterises this municipality in the Gironès. The project began in 2004 and was developed in three phases, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Diputació de Girona and European funds.

The museum occupies the former bòbila (brickworks) of Can Ginesta, which according to the museum's website was founded in 1908 and stood beside the railway line linking Sant Feliu de Guíxols with Girona, together with an adjoining new building. Within the brickworks site, elements of the brickmakers' work survive, such as the balsa (clay pit), the horno moro (Moorish kiln), the horno de llama invertida (inverted-flame kiln) and the chimney. The new building houses the exhibition rooms and the educational services.

The permanent exhibition follows the path from earth and firewood to the finished piece, reviews the traditional pieces of Quart terrissa, both the black, or “fumada”, and the red, presents the potting families and shows contemporary ceramics. Every December the town also holds the Feria de la Terrissa.
